The coal beneath these mountains helped fuel a nation and helped carry it through two World Wars.
The Coal That Fueled Freedom Tee pays tribute to the miners, families, and coal towns of Appalachia whose work shaped America's industrial and wartime history.
The coalfields around Lynch and Harlan County, Kentucky, became especially known for high-quality bituminous coal. Appalachian coal supplied railroads, factories, steel production, power generation, and other industries that were vital to the United States during the World War era.
Some Appalachian coal was especially prized for its low-smoke, high-heat qualities. Coal with these characteristics was valuable for industrial and transportation uses where efficient burning and reduced smoke were important. During both World Wars, coal was a critical part of the enormous energy and industrial effort required to move troops and materials, manufacture equipment, produce steel, and keep America's infrastructure running.
Behind every ton of coal were miners who went underground, families who kept the coal towns going, and generations of Appalachians whose labor helped power the country.
This shirt honors more than coal. It honors the men and women, the sacrifice, the communities, and the Appalachian heritage behind it.
The Coal That Fueled Freedom.
